COURSE CHANGE FOR 2008! The First Run
& Walk will still have two distances to choose from: 5K or
1-1/2 Mile Run / Walks. In 2007 the 5K was comprised of two loops
which made it difficult for the faster runners as they would overlap
both the slower 1-1/2 Mile participants as well as the slower
5K participants. The courses have changed to the following to
remedy this problem:
5K COURSE: The start / finish line is
located on Salmon St approximately mid-block between 1st &
Naito Pkwy. Begin by running east to Naito and turn left (north)
into the two near lanes (the southbound lanes) of Naito Pkwy.
Continue north past Davis St, across the RR tracks, past the Yards
at Union Station apartments and Ninth St. The Turn-Around is located
approximately 800 ft north of Ninth St past the Mounted Police
Horse Stables. The Turn-Around will be marked with an arc of cones
and a water table. After making the Turn-Around continue south
(in the north-bound lanes closest to the river) along Naito back
to Salmon St and turn right (west) to the finish line.
1-1/2 MILE COURSE: The start / finish
line is located on Salmon St approximately mid-block between 1st
& Naito Pkwy (same location as the 5K course). Begin by running
east to Naito and turn left (north) into the two far lanes (the
northbound lanes closest to the river) of Naito Pkwy. You will
be running in the same direction as the 5K event, but in the opposite
lanes. Continue north past Davis St to the Turn-Around located
at the intersection of Naito Pkwy & Everett St (marked with
both a water table and an arc of cones). Both the northbound and
southbound lanes will be coned for you beginning at Ash St (in
the northbound lanes) and Stark St (in the southbound lanes) all
the way to the Turn-Around at Everett St. When you reach Ash you
will be directed into the lane closest to the median between the
north and south bound lanes of Naito Pkwy. After making the Turn-Around
you will again continue in the lane closest to the median all
the way to Stark St. This will prevent the fast runners from the
1-1/2 Mile Race possibly mixing with the slower walkers from the
5K race and the fast runners in the 5K race mixing with the slower
walkers in the 1-1/2 Mile Race. Finish the event by continuing
along Naito Pkwy back to Salmon St and turn right (west) to the
finish line.
