ABOUT
THE EVENT
The
Blue Lake Triathlon was started back in 1983 by the
Portland Triathlon Association and a sporting goods
store in downtown Portland that has since closed it's
doors. It has undergone a great deal of change over
the past 20+ years including the addition of a Sprint
distance Triathlon, as well as a Sprint & Olympic
distance duathlon.
Recognized
by NW triathletes as the "must do" event to
open the triathlon season, the 2008 Blue Lake Triathlon
will again be split into a two-day event (Sprint event
on Saturday & Olympic event on Sunday). This two-day
fun filled weekend will include a sports expo, and the
Olympic distance event will serve as the TRI
NorthWest Club/Team Championship. Triathlon Clubs
from across the NW will converge on Blue Lake Park to
compete for the boasting rights as the top club of athletes
in the region.
The
bike portion of the event is flat and fast with the
majority of it on a section of Marine Dr that is closed
to all but local traffic. This makes this course one
of the safest and fastest in the region. The Sprint
course falls entirely on this portion of Marine Dr and
participants rarely encounter a vehicle. The Olympic
course has a 7-mile section that goes south towards
I-84 to the Troutdale Airport and back on quiet, lightly
traveled county roads.
During 2001, the event nearly doubled in size to almost
800 total participants. In 2002 the event grew to its
maximum of 1,000 participants with many others being
turned away. In 2003 the BLT was split into its current
two-day format to accomodate the increasing growth of
competitive NW athletes. So register early because
the Blue Lake Triathlon is expected to fill to
its limit of 800 participants each day. If and when
the race fills, we will post a notice on this website.
The
Tri-iT (Novice) triathlon was well accepted the last
couple of years. This event is designed for the first
timer, and/or for those that do not care about awards
and want to participant with someone in a different
division (i.e. father and son). Tri-iT participants
will be timed, but will not be included in the awards.
The swim portion of the Tri-iT event is a ¼ mile swim
instead of the ½ mile Sprint distance.
One
more reminder that the park officials asked us to pass
along to all you dog lovers out there - NO PETS ALLOWED
IN THE PARK. Sorry, but the pooch has to stay home
for this event.
