Registration for Bellingham’s Ski to Sea Race Sees Dramatic Increase for 2011 Event

From Press Release –

The Ski to Sea Race is experiencing a dramatic increase in team registrations for the 2011 race. At this time last year, the race only had 82 teams registered for the race. This year we have 386 teams registered as of today.

Race Director Pete Coy has shared: “Local teams have always waited till the last few weeks of April to submit their applications. If they wait till the last few weeks this year, teams face the chance of not getting into the race, as we have stated our limit is 500 teams.”

The increased interest in the Ski to Sea Race can be partly attributed to the national press coverage the race has recently received. Sunset Magazine has ranked Bellingham as the “Best Place to Play Year-Round” with the Ski to Sea race as a prime example of the wide range of recreational sports available in the area. TIME Magazine recently ranked Bellingham as the 9th “Most Active City” in America while highlighting the Ski to Sea race as an example of the level of activity. In May of 2010, the Ski to Sea race was the feature cover story of the Sports Section of USA Today, the Nation’s newspaper.

The Ski to Sea Race is a program of Whatcom Events, a 501c3 community non-profit organization. The present day Ski to Sea Race was started in 1973. The race continues the tradition of the 1911 Mount Baker Marathon, which was America’s original adventure race. Title sponsorship of the race is provided by Peoples Bank of Washington.
