Early Season Races for 2027, plus How Quickly Do We Lose Fitness?

October 27, 2026

It’s been a stormy, wet October for us, with frequent thunderstorms waking us in the middle of the night and sticky mud building up on our favorite backyard hillclimb. More often than not, my mornings have been filled with baking projects and gentle yoga practice the last couple of weeks. When worry about losing fitness sneaks in, I remind myself that it’s natural to adjust to changing seasons, and some downtime is healthy for both physical and mental well-being. That said, it’s also a beautiful time of year to be romping around outside, so if you’re inspired, get out there and enjoy the rest of autumn!

Start planning your 2027 with some favorite early season (and warmer climate) races to keep your training consistent through the holidays:

January 10 Las Vegas Marathon Las Vegas, NV
January 17 Lost Dutchman Marathon, Half & 10K Apache Junction, AZ
February 6 Run Sedona Half Marathon, 10K, 5K Sedona, AZ
February 7 Surf City Marathon, Half, 5K & Mile Huntington Beach, CA
February 20 Fourmidable Trail Runs Auburn, CA

‍

Do you also hear that voice whispering at you that some off-season rest will derail all that summer fitness? Fear not, ”the threat of losing fitness triggers a fear response that’s wildly out of proportion to what’s actually happening.”

How Quickly Do We Lose Fitness?

As someone who pretty much learned to swim at age 30, after registering for a triathlon, this latest feat of endurance is both terrifying and awesome. Catherine Breed, an experienced long-distance swimmer, became the first person to swim the entire California coastline, ending her journey at the Mexico border on October 19.

Maybe after a summer of running or cycling, you’ve had a niggle to try something new, or maybe the previous story has you motivated to start swimming… well, Ironman has introduced three new races for 2027 in some gorgeous U.S. locations: two 70.3 events in Utah and New York, and a full distance in northern Montana. You’ve got plenty of time before next summer to get your swim-bike-run dialed.

“We’re going to build this event with Seattle’s runners, businesses and local organizations, and keep building it together year after year”

If you still have events this year, the jitters may have started already, or you might be worried about the usual lack of sleep before race morning (not due to our aforementioned thunderstorms). This article seeks to convince us that this is not only normal, but that “Getting nervous is good for us. We need to be activated, we need to be ready. It’s natural—it’s your body getting ready for the race.” Still, there are a few things we can do to mitigate the difficulty of that pre-event insomnia.

Our Favorite Gear: A basic 18” foam roller. Small enough to tuck away from sight or take along on a road trip, and still long enough to roll my whole back, encouraging better spinal mobility.
