Runners and walkers of all skill levels are encouraged to join this festive, family friendly event. The event will include a timed 5K and 10K course as well as a family friendly Gobbler’s Walk. 5K (3.1 mile) loop course will take place on flat, paved pathways and trails through the Old Mill District along the beautiful Deschutes River. The 10K course will complete the loop twice. Partnering with Girls on the Run, Jamba Juice will be at the finish line with smoothies for all finishers.
The Central Oregon Thanksgiving Classic was originally started by Girls on the Run of Deschutes County in 2009 as the primary fundraising event for the organization. Now in its 5th official year, the race has grown to host over 1,000 runners and walkers every Thanksgiving morning in Bend’s Old Mill District. This 5k/10k race serves as the main source of funding for GOTR and is also the final goal for the young women participating in the program.
On Veteran’s Day weekend, November 9th-11th, Jamba Juice will host a fundraiser for Girls on the Run at both store locations in Bend. The company strives to support healthy and active lifestyles in the community and is excited to partner with GOTR to fulfill this goal. During the fundraiser, Jamba Juice will collect .50 of every Pumpkin Smash smoothie sold and donate the sum as a Jamba Juice Scholarship which will allow more girls to participate in the program. Last year, the company raised over $500 for GOTR and this year expects to raise over $800.
Girls on the Run is a life-changing program that encourages 3rd- 8th grade girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. GOTR combines physical training for a 3.1 mile (5k) running event with lessons that encourage the girls to make healthy lifestyle choices. Through running, playing games and discussing important issues, girls develop self-confidence, a sense of achievement and practice in team building. Lessons promote healthy lifestyle choices and address issues that include dealing with body image and resisting peer pressure.
