COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

STUMPTOWN LONG COURSE TRIATHLON
SWIM COURSE (1.2 Miles) – ITU setup with two loops in Blue Lake. After completing
Loop #1 swimmers will exit onto the beach and run around the two buoys (approximately 130 ft total) before re-entering the water for Loop #2. Water temperature will be 70 degrees+. There will be an all-male wave followed 5 minutes later by an all female & team swimmer wave.

The start line, four on-water turns, and the two beach turns will all be marked with large red buoys sponsored by Muscle Milk. There will also be six smaller intermediate yellow buoys providing additional sighting points.

BIKE COURSE (56 Miles) – The bike course will be comprised of three loops on a semi-closed Marine Drive (local traffic only for home / marina owners & friends who access the marinas from 185th Ave and private homes from 138th Ave). Cyclists should see very few vehicles (no trucks!) and have the entire road to ride on for most of the time. Some participants may never see a vehicle.

Begin by exiting the Transition Zone at the east end and run approximately 100 yards across the grass to the "bike start"timing mats at the paved apron to the main road within Blue Lake Park. After crossing the mats mount your bike at the "Bike Mount" sign and follow the road to the auxiliary exit from the park (approximately ¼ mile) turning left onto Blue Lake Road (closed to traffic). Cycle another 0.2 miles climbing approximately 30 ft (one of the two hills on the course) to Marine Dr. The next 55.1 miles of the course are on Marine Dr. First turn right and cycle east for just under ½ mile to the east-end turn-around (located prior to the 223rd Ave off-ramp – the east-end Marine Dr closure point). Make the turn-around and travel west for 8.7 miles to turn-around #2 located at the east end of the Broughton Beach parking lot and approximately 0.3 miles east of the James Gleason Boat Ramp (this is the west-end Marine Dr closure point). Approximately 6 miles after completing turn-around #1 you will pass under I-205. This is the only other grade change of any significance on the course. The drop is about 50 ft with a rise of 50 ft on the other side of the underpass. The remainder of the course is flat & fast enabling most athletes the opportunity to set their Long Course Tri bike PR.

After making the west-end turn-around for the 3rd time, cycle back to Blue Lake Rd (8.7 miles) turning right, then another 0.4 miles back to the “bike finish” timing mats. Note that you will re-enter Blue Lake Park just north of the auxiliary gate where you exited at the start of the bike. You will cross the grass on carpeting and then finishing the bike on the main park road. Dismount your bike at the “Bike Dismount” sign and run across the “bike finish” mats as you return your bike to the Transition Zone.

All turns on the bike course will be marked with large orange signs with white lettering & arrows. The course will also have mileage markers every 5 miles.
There will be aid stations at each turn-around with water & electrolyte. You must discard a bottle at these locations in order to receive a new one.

ENDURANCE DUATHLON – Duathletes will do the exact same bike course as the Triathletes but begin by lining up double file within the "run out"chute. This chute will be opened to the "bike start"mats and Duathletes will begin the bike in pairs in time trial fashion. The first duathletes will be started AFTER the first triathlete has begun their bike. The remainder of the bike portion of the event is exactly the same as the Triathletes.

RUN COURSE (13.1 Miles) – The run course will be comprised of two loops with a total of 1.7 miles within Blue Lake Park, 9.4 miles on the Marine Drive Bike Path and only 2 miles on county roads where some traffic will pass by. The course is basically flat with the only true hill being the overpass at 223rd Ave (approximate 30 ft climb and decent).

Begin by running within a fenced chute on the east edge of the Transition Zone, cross the "run start" timing mats and follow the chute out to a point adjacent to the bike start / finish. Follow the chalk marking and cones that will wind you 0.4 miles through Blue Lake Park on paved paths before exiting the park to the south of the auxiliary gate used as the bike exit to the park. Turn right onto Blue Lake Rd to the Marine Drive Bike Path and run approximately 2.35 miles to a point where the bike path joins Marine Dr. From this intersection you will run ¼ mile within the bike path/break down lane on the west side of Marine Dr before turning onto NW Dunbar Ave. Run this loop back to Marine Dr and then the Marine Dr Bike Path. Now retrace your steps back to Blue Lake Rd and run south for .3 miles before re-entering Blue Lake Park at the Lake House. Follow the paths and directional signage within the park to a point where you will rejoin the original run start paths to begin loop #2. After re-entering the park the a second time at the Lake House follow the paths & signage along the water to the finish line adjacent to the Transition Zone.

The run course will be marked with white chalk, large yellow directional signs with blue lettering & arrows at the major turns and smaller pink directional signs with black lettering & arrows within Blue lake Park. Aid stations with water, ice, electrolyte and energy gels will be located approximately every 1.5 miles. All miles will be marked.

ENDURANCE DUATHLON – Duathletes will run the same exact course as the Triathletes. The Duathlon begins with the bike so there is only one run, the half marathon.
