Run For The Views, Stay For The Brews

You won’t find a better way to see Astoria, Oregon’s scenic, yet historic waterfront, than by running the 4th Annual Run on the River on Sunday, May 21. The City’s Riverwalk Trail spans Astoria’s historic Columbia River waterfront, and is Run on the River’s race route for 5K, 10K and half marathon distances. Mostly paved with some sections of wooden track, the trail features highlights Astoria’s industrial history as the first American settlement on the west coast.

Runners will enjoy views of the Columbia River, along with viewpoints like the Astoria Column built in 1926, four-mile Astoria-Megler Bridge – the longest truss bridge on North America, and Astoria’s Maritime Museum.  The race course also passes through the busy port area, shops and marina on the way to a quieter stretch of trail as the old rail line crosses the mouth of a shallow inlet of the Columbia River called Alderbrook Lagoon. Race participants will be able to hear barking sea lions, wave to passengers on the Astoria Trolley whose tracks parallel the course, or take in the busy freighters on the water.

Although this race is only in its fourth year, word is spreading as runners continue to return for the incredible course and post-race celebration.  Runners receive a t-shirt and custom finisher’s medal made by local glass studio, Fernhill Glass. Race sponsor, Buoy Beer Company is located in an old cannery building right on the water in Astoria’s historic waterfront and offers each participant lunch and a beverage after their finish. Top finishers also receive awards, as well as prizes for overall spirit.

Just two hours from Portland, race participants will not only enjoy the scenic Riverwalk Trail, but also experience the sights and sounds of this port city situated at the mouth of the Columbia River. Colorful, historic homes and buildings and evergreen Douglas fir, Spruce and Hemlock trees, along with miles of sandy beaches have made Astoria a peaceful getaway in the heart of the Northwest.

Run on the River is hosted by the Astoria Parks, Recreation and Community Foundation, and is a major fundraiser for the Astoria Parks Department. Money raised will be offered as scholarships to families in Astoria who may not have the financial ability to use the City’s facilities or recreational services.
